Description
Jonathan is a classic American heritage apple that has been around since 1826. It has bright red skin and a spicy, tart-sweet taste that sets it apart. This variety can handle the cold and grows best in Zones 4-8. It makes medium-sized fruit with soft, juicy flesh that is great for eating fresh, baking, cider, and pies. The trees grow to be 12 to 15 feet tall, have a round shape, and are very productive. The harvest happens in the middle to late September. To grow Jonathan, it needs to be cross-pollinated with varieties like Gala, Honeycrisp, or Red Delicious. The wine-like flavor gets stronger over time, which makes it a favorite among specialty markets and heirloom fans. The unique spicy notes and versatility of this plant make it worth growing even though it only lasts for 2 to 3 months. Jonathan's genes live on in Jonagold and many other popular modern varieties.
